Crawl Space Dehumidifier Cost (2026)
A dehumidifier is not folded into the $3–$10 per square foot encapsulation range. HomeGuide's 2026 guide lists dehumidifier installation as its own line at $1,000–$3,500. Figures are published US cost ranges from HomeGuide's 2026 guide, not quotes. Your contractor's price will differ. On the encapsulation calculator the machine appears only after you select it, and the total's high end then moves by $3,500.
That separation matters because a liner and a machine solve different problems. The vapour barrier is the installed encapsulation line: area times $3 to area times $10. Sealing vents and holes is another line, $150–$450. A dehumidifier is electrical equipment with a drain. The guide does not say every encapsulated crawl space includes one. If the proposal's single price is silent, ask whether the $1,000–$3,500 installation is inside it.
What the published line covers
The figure is an installation range, not a model number and not a pint-per-day capacity. This site will not invent a capacity, an efficiency, or a filter price. The range is wide for the same reasons the encapsulation range is wide: labour is the dominant share of crawl-space work, and access and clearance change the hours. A low machine in a tight space is still an installation. The $1,000 end and the $3,500 end are both in the guide. Neither is your quote.
Put the machine next to the size band so the scale is obvious. A 1,000 square foot encapsulation, with no other extras, sits at $3,000–$10,000. Adding the dehumidifier makes the combined high end $13,500 before sealing or an inspection. A 1,500 square foot band is $4,500–$15,000, and a 2,000 square foot band is $6,000–$20,000. The machine does not scale with those areas in the guide. It stays $1,000–$3,500 whether the footprint is 1,000 or 2,000 square feet. A per-square-foot reading of the whole invoice will look cheaper on a larger house even when the machine price did not change.
Drainage is the other water line
Standing water is a different published item. A drainage system, described as a French or perimeter drain including trenching, gravel, pipe, and a pump, is $800–$3,000. A dehumidifier does not replace that line in the guide, and the drain does not replace the machine. Select both on the calculator only when the quote names both. Cleaning or repairs, if required before any of this, are $500–$8,000. Those dollars are not inside the dehumidifier range.
Mould is larger again. Remediation is published at $15–$30 per square foot, or $1,500–$4,000 as a typical crawl-space job. The calculator uses the per-square-foot band. On 1,200 square feet that is $18,000–$36,000, which dominates an encapsulation-plus-dehumidifier total. Drying the air is not, on these figures, a substitute price for remediation. If the quote uses the machine to avoid a mould line, ask for the mould scope in writing.
How to read a combined proposal
Ask four questions. Is the barrier mil on the page, from 6 mil at $0.30–$0.35 of material per square foot up to 20 mil at $0.60–$0.70? Is sealing included or still the $150–$450 line? Is the dehumidifier the installation range of $1,000–$3,500, and who warranties the unit? Is a drain in the price? An inspection, if it is a separate visit, is $100–$250. Insulation installation is $500–$3,700 if the walls or the floor system are in the scope, and old insulation removal is $1–$2 per square foot. None of those is the dehumidifier.
The per-square-foot guide is the right place for the $3–$10 band itself. Use this page when the proposal adds a machine. Type the area, tick the dehumidifier, and compare your quote with the summed range. A number below the low end or above the high end is a reason to ask which line moved. It is still not a quote from this site. Labour rates and clearance are why two honest bids can sit at opposite ends of $1,000–$3,500 without either one being a typo.
Do not turn the machine into a per-square-foot rate by dividing $1,000–$3,500 by the footprint. On 2,000 square feet that division looks small beside the $6,000–$20,000 encapsulation band, and it hides a fixed installation. Keep the line in dollars. If the quote also removes old insulation, that removal is $1–$2 per square foot and belongs on its own row, not inside the dehumidifier. The same rule applies to a pump in the drainage line: it stays inside the $800–$3,000 drain, not inside this machine.
